George's CHD Journey

Our son George was born on January 29, 2012. He was a big baby, weighing in at 9 lbs., 2 oz., and he was perfect in every way.

He ate well, and slept well as long as he was in the big bed with us. He was developing and growing as any normal baby was. Weight gain was great. He began rolling over, sitting up, and crawling around the expected times.

He developed his own adorable personality. He was loving and sweet, and sometimes quite the rascal.

We were in love with our happy and healthy little boy.

But on June 11th, 2013, we learned that our perfectly healthy little boy was not so healthy after all. He was diagnosed with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR). He did not have the usual alarming symptoms as many children do that are diagnosed with this defect, but instead it was his pediatrician that detected a heart murmur at his 15-month check-up and wanted us to get it checked out. To read more about George's diagnosis and my thoughts about the upcoming surgery, read here.

Before the surgery, the pediatric heat surgeon wanted a cardiac CT done on George so that he could get a better idea of what was going on with George's heart. For this, George needed to be completely sedated. You can read about that experience here.

George went in for surgery on October 7th, 2013. You can read about our day-by-day experience by clicking the links below:

Day 1 (day of surgery)
Day 2 (off the oxygen)
Day 3 (lounging around)
Day 4 (attempting to walk)
Days 5 & 6 (leaving the PICU and going home!)

2 weeks after surgery

 1 month after surgery

He calls it his "boo-boo".

3 months and 4 months after surgery

We are amazed at his recovery from open heart surgery. He is stronger than ever!
